Painting and Decorating FAQ’s
When is the best time to get my house painted?
On average it is recommended to have your exterior walls painted every 5-10 years depending on your needs really.
We find that homes closer to the coastal areas of Brighton tend to require more frequent painting as they are subject to more weathering whereas properties more inland require less frequent painting as they have more protection from the elements.
The condition of your render also has a part to play. For example if it begins to crack then It is recommended you get it looked at sooner rather than later as hairline cracks can be filled in and painted relatively easily whereas larger cracks may require re-rendering and then painting.
I notice my paint is starting to peel. Is this something to worry about?
Yes as this means that the building substrate is no longer protected by the paint.
Also it’s possible that when the property was painted the first time they didn’t use a stabiliser. A stabiliser remedies poor surfaces, seals and binds chalky or weathered areas and gives a more robust base for decorating.
Can I have parts of my house painted as opposed to the whole thing?
We can do a single elevation of a house but not a section of an elevation. Sometimes access is difficult to achieve to some sides of the property so a homeowner may ask us to provide a quote for just one side. We are happy to do so.
Do you provide scaffolding for jobs that require it?
Yes we do. We can erect and remove scaffolding as part of our quote for painting your property.
Do different colors affect the price?
Sometimes but not by much.
The brand of paint and color is the key part of this equation. We like to use Dulux weather shield paint as it’s a trusted effective brand that is well regarded for its ability to withstand the weather.
Do you supply the paint?
We supply Dulux paint as part of our service as standard. If however you have a request for a specific brand or your paint to be used we will do our best to accommodate you.
Are you insured?
Yes we are insured and our tradespeople are qualified and experienced professionals.
Do you paint home exteriors?
Yes we do. This is one of our busiest services.
Do you paint interiors?
Yes we do. We often do full painting and decorating jobs in homes as part of a refurbishment or when someone has just purchased a property. We can paint and decorate to your taste and choice and make reccomendations where needed.
Do you paint garden walls and structures?
Yes. We also cover communal hallways, offices, cabinets and anywhere that needs to be painted. This includes Timber patio doors & timber back doors.
Do you do wall murals?
Yes our experienced team does wall murals. These can be quite intricate and our team have a lot of experience in laying out and installing such murals.
What is the difference between a flat, high gloss, satin, and eggshell finish?
These terms indicate the sheen or gloss level, or degree or light reflectance, of the paint. Basically, these are terms that are used to describe paint’s shininess.
FINISH
Where to Use: Kitchen and bathroom walls, kitchen cabinets, banisters and railings, trim, furniture, door jambs and window sills
Comments: More durable, stain-resistant and easier to wash. However, the higher the gloss, the more likely surface imperfections will be noticed.
SEMI-GLOSS
Where to use: Kitchen and bathroom walls, hallways, children’s rooms, playrooms, doors, woodwork and trim.
Comments: More stain-resistant and easier to clean than flat paints. Better than flat for high-traffic areas.
SATIN OR SILK (Range overlapping eggshell and semi-gloss)
Where to use: Similar characteristics to semi-gloss and eggshell.
Comments: Similar characteristics to semi-gloss and eggshell.
EGGSHELL
Where to use: Can be used in place of flat paints on wall surfaces especially in halls, bathrooms and playrooms. Can be used in place of semi-gloss paints on trim for a less shiny appearance.
Comments: It resists stains better than flat paint and gives a more lustrous appearance.
FLAT
What to use: For general use on walls and ceilings. Hides surface imperfections.
Comments: Stain removal can be difficult. Use for uniform, non-reflecting appearance. Best suited for low-traffic areas.
MATTE Same characteristics as flat.
What colours do I have to choose from?
Thousands. We even have to access a colour matching service where we can scan a colour and find out what it is for you if you want to go with a colour that you already have up on a wall but don’t know what it is.
What if I have mould on my walls?
We can use an anti mould solution to clean your walls.
After this we can paint the area to make it as good as new. Please bear in mind we can’t guarantee that mould won’t return as this can be caused by various factors outwith our control and a damp specialist may be required to assess and remedy the root cause of any re-occurring mould.
